Cards, Video

Thanks with Varied Vases (MIY #2)

Today’s Make it Yourself Monday card was inspired by artwork in the catalog!  I love the bright and cheery colors of the ‘Hello’ card found on page 45 and was inspired to make my own version using the supplies I already own.

The catalog is an excellent resource for inspiration, whether you are looking for color inspiration, card design or just trying to find other ways to use the supplies you have.

I love the color palette in the original card in the catalog.  That was one element I knew I wanted to copy!

I don’t have the textured impressions folder that was used in the inspiration card and I really wanted to use a different card design so this is where I began to stray.  But that is OKAY!!!

For you visual learners, I have created a step by step video.  It isn’t a fast frame like last weeks.  I’m trying to decide which I prefer.  Feel free to let me know your preference.

If you are interested in making one for yourself (and I think you definitely should!) then click the following link for the printable project sheet.  Remember, you can shop for any needed supplies on my website (store link is above or you can click on the products in the list below to be taken directly there.  Also note that, Varied Vases and the Vase Builder Punch can be purchased together in a bundle for a 10% savings, or individually if you prefer one without the other.

Paper Pumpkin

Broadway Star (Paper Pumpkin)

06.18_PP_KitContents

The Paper Pumpkin kit was a REAL treat this month!  We were given a small tip that it would coordinate with one of the new product suites that was just released in the 2018-2019 Annual Catalog, Broadway Birthday, which is a gorgeous, glitzy collection perfect for birthdays of all ages (male and female).  I was so excited!

It did not disappoint!

Right out of the box, the projects that were designed by SU! with this kit create two different birthday cards (4 of each) in bright, cheery colors.  There is an exclusive twine for embellishing as well (black/gold) which is a real treat.

IMG_0692

IMG_0694

So fun and easy to make.  I didn’t follow the directions EXACTLY! I mostly just used the photo to guide me.  Because they have done most of the work, it is really easy to do!

I have realized that I craft in the same style I cook, which really makes me laugh!  I love to cook (and bake) but I have a terrible time following recipes.  I don’t measure exactly (most of the time), and I freely make substitutions of ingredients (especially if I have something I am trying to use up).  So, usually when my family comes home and asks “What’s for dinner?”, my reply is usually something like “something similar to…” or “a version of…”.  Sometimes it results in success (sometimes not!).  My family is so sweet and gracious to me that they never complain (well, mostly never!).

The stamp set will be a valuable addition to my collection as it contains some great celebratory sentiments, beyond birthdays.

06.18_PP_STAMPARTWORK

I created some alternate projects as well.  These were inspired by the Paper Pumpkin design team.  They always show additional variations for the kit contents.  Which I think is a FABULOUS idea!  Usually I do switch up a few of the projects.  This month, because it coordinates with the new Broadway Birthday Suite, I also included some products from the suite.

IMG_0690

I’m always in need of gift card holders.  This card style design is my go-to as it is so easy to send in the mail and does double duty acting as the birthday card AND gift holder.  Smart!  Shown in the above photo with the “WISH” die cut, you can see all I did was add a Lovely Lipstick card base, cut one of the included lime card bases in half.  I used the pattern half to decorate the panels, and the back, white half to line the card base to allow a writing space inside my card.  The gift card slides right in to the pocket on the left and the cake (which is popped up on dimensionals) holds the flap closed.

IMG_0688

I really enjoy receiving my kit every month!  Local friends should check my calendar and to my Paper Pumpkin Party each month.  We gather, and put our kits together, have some snacks and fun fellowship.  I always have some supplies on hand for those that want to create an alternate project or two.  And, if you are not yet a subscriber, but have been thinking about it, stop by!  I try to have extras on hand to sample and encourage my guests to bring friends.  It’s very casual and fun!

Those are are not close enough to attend, don’t worry!  You won’t be left out of the fun.  I will send my subscribers who live out of town the same project packets with instructions so you can create your own alternate projects too.  Just drop me a line and let me know you would like it!

Thanks for stopping by today!  Have a beautiful day and remember to make something pretty!

The Journey Begins

Welcome to my new paper crafting website.  This hobby has been my favorite of mine for many years.  I have made hundreds (if not thousands) of cards to send to loved ones, donate to charities and to give as gifts.  I have learned how to take my products and create home decor, gift packaging and works of the heart for many to enjoy.  As my children are now older, I find myself in a new season of life with a new energy to expand my hobby into a resource which enables others to discover the rewarding benefits this creative outlet has to offer.   Please be patient as I build content.  I have a very large vision for this website, but I know it will take time and I hope you stick with me and visit often.  I welcome requests for tutorials, product tips, techniques, etc.  I hope this website will be a complete and convenient resource for new and seasoned crafters alike.  Thanks for joining me in my journey! We are going to have a FABULOUS time!

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

What about that name, you ask?  You see I have been a city/suburb girl all my life but when I married my husband we had this dream to one day own a country home, with a big front porch and a few acres of peace and beauty where we can grow old (one someday run “Grandma Camp”).  Two years ago we realized that dream and we began our transition into the country (which is really just on the fringe of the suburb).   As our children continue to grow and leave the nest we decided to expand our little family.  We now have a lively Golden, named Rosie, and 10 adorably active chicks that entertain us on a daily basis.  They are now part of our family and will likely creep into my posts, as they do love attention and they are quite photogenic!  We love to have fun on our little growing farm.

Stamping 101

Lesson 2: Find Your Niche

There are so many options when it comes to WHEN and WHERE you paper craft.  As I said before, it truly is a craft for ANYONE!  I have heard people say “I can’t be a stamper because…  1.I don’t have time to go to classes, 2. I don’t have the money to invest in all the needed supplies 3.  I’m not artistic enough, etc.  But, if you give me a chance, I will show you how false those statements are!  Below are just SOME of the opportunities I have for my customers:

LOCAL options

Papercrafting is a wonderful social hobby.  Getting together with friends to create is both fun and stress-relieving.  I offer a variety of classes for my local customers to choose from.  You can always check my calendar for class offerings and details. Most classes cost $10-15 (or FREE with a qualifying product purchase), take approx. 2 hours and most of the time all supplies are provided for you (read class descriptions to see if you need your own adhesive or tool kit)!

Now, if you prefer to stamp in the comfort of your own home, with a few friends, I can provide materials and instruction for that as well (and you can earn Host Rewards).  Perfect for Girls Night Out activity, showers, birthdays, etc. these custom classes are also great because they can be tailored to your specific needs and wants.  I’m happy to tell you more about any of these opportunities.  Contact me anytime!

ONLINE options

For those not located in the Shelby County area, or with time limitations that make it difficult to come to a class in my home, consider  my Stamp of the Month Club.  As the name suggests, each month I will choose a Stamp of the Month to design a class around and post the details the last week of the month.  There is no ongoing commitment, you can choose to participate however often you like, every month or once a year.   There are a variety of purchase options that allow you to tailor the class to meet your specific needs.   This is a great way to grow your stamp collection and sample various embellishments and decide whether or not you would like to order full packs, rolls, etc.

Additionally, I post free tutorials regularly on my blog.  Most of these tutorials come with a supply list, which contains direct links where you can order the needed supplies or compare to what you already have on hand to recreate at your convenience. When making your purchases online, I recommend you read about my Stampers with Benefits club which awards perks and/or free products for purchases over $25.  I appreciate all of my customers.  Your interest in my classes and your support by shopping with me allows me to continue doing what I love to do! and I enjoy being able to reward you for your patronage.

Classes and Clubs are a fun opportunities to learn techniques, try new products and build up your inventory of available cards to use as you need them.  Whether you gather in large groups, with a few friends or even tuck yourself into a quiet place and craft alone, you can find happiness and joy in this craft – in the making, in the giving and even in the receiving!!

In the next lesson we will explore another option to help jump start your creativity, learn some new techniques and discover an economical way to sample a variety of products with Stampin’ Up’s All-Inclusive kits!  Whether you are trying to fit this hobby into a busy schedule, or simply want something you can make with minimal prep time or even something you can easily take along with you for crafting on the go, kits are fun to make and fun to share!  Follow me to Lesson 3: Exploring SU! Kits.

Stamping 101

Lesson 1 – Tools of the Trade

There are 3 essentials when it comes to stamping:  STAMPS, INK AND PAPER.

2018_AC_P005_A

STAMPS

Stampin’ Up! offers 3 styles of stamps: Red Rubber in both traditional wood mount and clear mount as well as Photopolymer (the newest to join the family).  Watch my video in my All About Series explaining all the specifics for each style and learn some tips and tricks in using them.

You can find a stamp for practically any imaginable need.  When just getting started, I make these two suggestions: 1.  Consider: What is your need?  What kind of card or project are you looking to make?  2.  With this end goal in mind, look for a stamp set that could be more versatile beyond that project.  We have many sets in the catalog that are what I call “Super Sets”.  These sets have a combination of sentiments, backgrounds and artistry.  The following is a short list of suggested Super Sets just to give you an idea.  There are many, many more available.  All stamp sets on this list are available for $25 or less:

  1. Detailed with Love (page 39)
  2. P.S. You’re the Best (page 48)
  3. Happy Birthday Gorgeous (page 72)
  4. Little Elephant (page 91)
  5. Labels to Love (page 103)
  6. Best Birds (page 108)
  7. Sheltering Tree (page 140)
  8. Waterfront (page 149)
  9. Oh So Eclectic (page 156)
  10. Bouquet Blooms (page 167)

Do you have a copy of the new Annual Catalog?  Click here to find out how to get your FREE copy and/or to view it online now.

This is where the inspiration starts to ignite!

INK

Stampin’ Up! offers several styles of ink and there is so much that you can do with it!  We have Classic (Dye) Ink Pads in each of our 50 beautiful colors as well as some specialty ink pads.   However, when it comes to putting color onto your stamped images and projects we won’t just limit you to ink pads. There are 2 kinds of markers as well – Stampin’ Write (Dye Based) and Stampin’ Blends (Alcohol Based).  I have a video explaining the different kinds of ink and when to use them as well as other coloring options.

This is where the fun begins!

PAPER

As great and wonderful as ink is, it isn’t much in the paper crafting world unless it’s put on paper.  Stampin’ Up! has some of the finest quality of paper that I have had the pleasure of working with (and believe me when I say I have tried A LOT!).  From our ultra smooth Whisper White and Very Vanilla, that is above all others when it comes to providing you with a clean crisp image, to its newer cousin the Ultra Thick which not only has the same stampability but makes luxurious card bases in the same two colors.  You will also fall in love with rest of the high quality, thick cardstock in perfect color match to our ink colors (never have to worry again if your shades of color will clash). SU! also carries an entire line of specialty papers and a line of Design Series Paper Collections that will blow your socks off!  Learn more about SU! Papers and watch my paper test to see why I think SU! paper is the best available!

This is where your vision starts to come to life!

That sums up the Essential 3 in Stamping.  However, in order to create a finished product you will also need a basic tool kit.  I think everyone’s opinion will begin to vary here.  I’m sure some of the items I feel like I couldn’t craft without NOW are things that I did not have when I first start in this craft 20 years ago and I have kept this in mind as I created this starter tool kit list.

My husband always says having the proper tools for the job makes the task so much more pleasant and I completely agree with him (even though I think my tools are waaaay cooler than his tools – LOL)!

  1. Stampin’ Trimmer (126889)  It’s name is somewhat misleading because it does so much more than trimming paper! I always keep extra blade refills on hand as well (126995) (NOTE:  I have a video in my All About Series specifically for this wonderful trimmer because it is JUST THAT AWESOME!  Learn more HERE)
  2. Paper Snips (103579) These super sharp snips are perfect for fussy cutting your stamped images, creating banner ends, and so much more.  I love that they come with a plastic blade guard that helps to protect from the sharp edges/tip when not in use.
  3. Stampin’ Pierce Mat (126199) Not only does this mat protect your work surface when using your piercing tool, it is the perfect dense cushion on which to stamp your photopolymer stamps to assure a clean, crisp image (you will learn more about this in the first lesson on stamping.
  4. Simply Shammy (147042) and/or Stampin’ Scrub (126200) with Stampin’ Mist (102394)  You are making an investment when you purchase stamps.  With proper care and cleaning they will last you a VERY long time (some of mine are 15+ years old!) I don’t think I could ever do without my Stampin’ Scrub/Mist; however, I am LOVING my new Simply Shammy and I feel confident in saying that if your budget is tight you would be fine to start with the shammy until you can add the Stampin’ Scrub and Mist to your collection.
  5. Adhesives – Stampin’ Up offers a wide assortment of adhesives; however, not every adhesive can be used in every job.  There is a chart on page 213 of the 2018-19 catalog for suggested uses for each adhesive (Printable version: Adhesive Cheat Sheet).  I use them all; however, I would recommend you start with the most useful 3 (this is my opinion of course, based on what I use the most): Multipurpose Liquid Glue (110755), Snail (104332) and Stampin’ Dimensionals (regular: 104430 or mini: 144108)

Basic Tool Kit

NOTE:  Ordering your basic tool kit from me using the current Host Code will earn you some FREE goodies.  Read more about using the Host Code and my Stampers with Benefits club and the perks that come with it.  Additionally, if you send me an email letting me know you ordered your tool kit with me, I’ll send you a Clear Mount Stamp case to store your Simply Shammy for FREE!

A few other items I highly recommend you add to your collection, as you are able, are a Bone Folder (102330) for making crisp, clean fold lines, Grid Paper (130148) for protecting your work surface and providing a ruler and lines for placement, and the Stampin’ Scrub 126200) and Stampin’ Mist (102394) for thorough cleaning and care of your stamps and maybe a punch or two in basic shapes for adding additional elements to your projects (such as the Starburst/143717, Pretty Label/143715,  Everyday Label/144668 or Scalloped Tag Topper/133324).

Highly Recommended Supplements to the Basic Tool Kit

Grid Paper

$11.00

The basic tool kit is just that – basic.  It’s not too big it and doesn’t require much space to store.  In fact, when I first started out all my products fit into a clear plastic Iris Box or tote bag with pockets.  Something I could just tuck into a closet or hang on a door hook when I finished crafting.  Over the past couple of decades it has grown just a tad (*wink, wink*) but this is truly enough when you start to allow you to make some lovely projects.    Whether you are ready to invest in this tool kit and get started on the path to paper crafting or you are searching for an even more affordable way to start, continue on to Lesson 2: Finding Your Niche to learn about some options that are helpful when you just get started..

Manly Moments (Paper Pumpkin)

Paper Pumpkin to the rescue!!!

05.18_PP_KITCONTENTS

We have been undergoing renovations in our home for what seems like forever!  Demo day was actually April 12 (that day is forever emblazoned in my brain).  We gutted the kitchen for a complete remodel AND my backyard was destroyed as giant equipment came in digging a hole and ripping out trees for a swimming pool.  Of course, we didn’t plan it that way.  In fact, the pool construction was supposed to begin early in the new year!  However, as things happen, there were “complications” obtaining permits (the woes of purchasing an old house in unincorporated land that was apparently never properly subdivided and documented with the county (how that was not discovered when we closed on the sale 2 years ago is beyond me!).  In any case, that caused a long delay (and much added stress to my dear husband…talk about hoops and hurdles!).  In addition, the kitchen remodel began about a week early. Seriously though, I arrived home from attending SU! Onstage event in Atlanta (FUN!!!) on a Sunday evening and received a call the next day, “Sherrie, would it be okay if our demo guys come Thursday to start the tear out?” and I’m looking around my fully stocked kitchen trying not to panic!  The tear out was not supposed to be until the following week so I thought I had another week/weekend to pack and prepare some meals to get us through the period we would not have appliances (other than a microwave and outdoor grill).  So, we went into hyper mode because how do you tell a contractor, “um, no don’t come early”.  Seriously! Usually you are begging them to come on time!  Anyway, we are now in the midst of it all and there has been little time (and motivation) for crafting.  So, you can imagine, how thrilled I was to receive this kit in time to create cards for the special men in my life!  They are gorgeous and came together so quickly!

IMG_0668

Not to mention that completely calm, serene color palette! I couldn’t help thinking how much I would LOVE to be tucked somewhere inside that mountain range on my card!  Maybe drifting through the lake with no place I needed to be.  LOL!

The stamp set is equally amazing!  I can’t tell you how many times I wish I had more masculine friendly sentiments to customize my cards.  These will come in handy for a long time to come!! The fonts are simple.  I never realize how flourishy (is that a word?) sentiment stamps I choose are until I am trying to create a masculine card.  I really must pay more attention when I am placing my orders.

05.18_PP_STAMPARTWORK

Thank you, Paper Pumpkin for coming to my rescue this month!  I think this month was the epitome of a “creative escape”  because I am sure I would not have done any crafting without it! Who am I kidding?  I would have found a way to make these needed cards because purchasing cards causes me very real, palpable pain; however, there would have been much stress in the process. And crafting is supposed to relieve stress, right?

Do you ever feel like that?  Wish you had time to create a special card or gift but for whatever reason (no time, no mojo, no supplies) you just can’t pull it off?  Paper Pumpkin is such a no brainer.  Always reliable.  Always on time.  Whether you are creating to make ahead and stock up or find yourself in a pinch and need something quick, it will be a life saver.  To read more about Paper Pumpkin and the perks my Paper Pumpkin subscribers receive click the icon below.  I would love to have you join my club!!

Thanks for stopping in today!  I hope your day contains lots less dust than mine! (truly I cannot keep up with it right now).  I’ll go for some of the pixie kind, please?  So, even if I’m not, I hope you are out there making something pretty!  Have a blessed day!

Paper Pumpkin

You Are My Anchor (Paper Pumpkin)

This month’s Paper Pumpkin has so much summertime fun potential!  Included in the kit you get supplies to create 20 mini cards (with envelopes) as well as 4 adorable boxes.  The boxes can be used to hold a set of cards to be given as a gift (or used to store cards until you need them). Although the cards and boxes can be used separately.

IMG_0659

This picture shows the projects I made, following the instructions included in the kit.  These adorable cards are the perfect size to attach to a small gift or used as gift enclosures.  I also thought they would be perfect to tuck inside a suitcase for a husband traveling or a child going off to camp, just to send a little love note or few encouraging words.

As much as I love these small cards, I have much more use for standard card sizes so, taking the included materials, as the basic layout of one of the cards, I added a Pool Party card base and created a card I can send in the mail.  The banner was cut from one of the envelopes.  Easy Peasy!

IMG_0663

But the fun doesn’t stop there.  This stamp set that is full of summertime fun icons had me reminiscing of  summers past when my children were much younger and we played Summer Bingo and Road Trip Bingo.  How cute are these little stickers that can be used to stick on the bingo cards?  I used the white round Avery stickers you can pick up at most box stores.  Tucked inside one of these boxes, this would also be a cute gift for a little one!  You could even make a super cute travel Tic-Tac-Toe game!

IMG_0665

I just love this months creative fun! All of the instructions for these fun additional ideas can be found on my private FB page that is made available for my PP subscribers.

It’s never too late to join in the fun of my Paper Pumpkin Club.  Click HERE to  or learn more or to sign up.  Subscribe month to month to be sure you never miss out on this creativity escape (no obligation, cancel anytime or put on hold if you need to skip a month).  You can also purchase prepaid plans (1, 3, 6 and 12 month options).  This is a perfect option if you want to give it a try before subscribing or even to give as a gift.  Who wouldn’t love such a surprise pop up in their mailbox every month?  It’s a gift that keeps on giving.   At just under $20 per month this mail surprise is a great deal!

This is a little sneak peak to the free tutorial available to my Paper Pumpkin Subscribers.
